Jeff Spicoli: [Desmond re-enters; Spicoli follows with bagel stuffed into crotch; with open shirt, barefoot, holding Vans] Wait a minute, there’s no birthday party for me here! Hello, Mr. Hand.
Mr. Hand: What’s the reason for your truancy?
Jeff Spicoli: Just couldn’t make it on time.
Mr. Hand: You couldn’t, or you wouldn’t?
Jeff Spicoli: See, there was a full crowd at the food lines.
Mr. Hand: Food will be eaten on YOUR time. Why are you continuously late for this class, Mr. Spicoli? Why do you shamelessly waste my time like this?
Jeff Spicoli: [long pause, but then with complete truth in his answer] I don’t know.
Mr. Hand: [Mr. Hand goes to blackboard and writes the words 'I Don't Know', then underlines them]
[reciting]
Mr. Hand: I like that. ‘I Don’t Know.’ That’s nice.
[imitating]
Mr. Hand: ‘Mr. Hand, will I pass this class?’ Gee, Mr. Spicoli, I don’t know! You know what I’m going to do? I’m going to leave your words right up here for all my classes to enjoy, giving you full credit of course, Mr. Spicoli.
Jeff Spicoli: All right!
From CBS News here
White House press secretary Jay Carney did not shed any light Monday on the allegations uncovered by CBS News that ATF intentionally let thousands of assault rifles and other weapons fall into the hands of Mexico’s drug cartels. Insiders call the controversial practice letting guns “walk.” In the wake of our CBS News investigation, Mexico has asked the U.S. for more information. Two AK-47 type variant assault rifles that ATF allegedly let “walk” were found at the murder scene of Border Patrol Agent Brian Terry last December. Here’s the excerpt from today’s White House briefing:
CBS News chief White House correspondent Chip Reid: “Do you have any comment on the story and on these developments today?”
Carney: “I don’t. Obviously, as the president pointed out when he spoke here with President Calderon, we take the issue of the flow of guns south very seriously, as we do the issue of the flow of drugs north. And — but beyond that, I don’t have any comment.”
Reid: “Is he aware of this specific allegation…”
Carney: “I don’t know.”
Reid: “… that hundreds of guns went into Mexico with the knowledge of ATF?”
Carney: “I don’t know.”
Some things to note: I’m glad CBS is on this story, I really am, but don’t be mislead into thinking that they uncovered this. Credit for breaking this goes to Mike Vanderboegh at Sipsey Street Irregulars and David Codrea at War on Guns. CBS is a late-comer to this, a welcome one, but they didn’t do the hard work and they didn’t get Grassley involved etc… They also fail to mention the work of others.
Here is Sipsey Street’s entry on this particular item here. Here is David Codrea’s here.
A commenter (thank you oh rare visitor) asked if I had thoughts on this. I guess I do, I cannot express them as well as others but here goes.
BATFU is simply the most corrupt law enforcement agency in the U.S. Institutional perjury, lawless behavior, arrogance and complete unaccountability are their hallmarks. Professionally I have had to deal with BATFU agents on occasion, in situations where they were under oath to tell the truth. I was less than impressed. I also served as the foreman on a Federal Grand Jury for over 18 months. From time to time BATFU agents appeared. I know several BATFU agents personally, they are decent enough people. Strong Christian men in some instances.
I fail to understand the disconnect between these decent agents, some obviously involved in the exposing of Project Gunwalker, at considerable risk to their careers and who knows what else. I have to ask however, why they don’t speak up more, to stop the abuse that is evident in this organization? It really doesn’t matter if they are battling terrorist masterminds or harassing the local gun dealer over his transfer book. Jody Keeku exists, people are in federal prison because of nothing more than institutional dishonesty and lawless behavior of this agency. I cannot reconcile the agents that I do know and how they could countenance that David Olafson sits in prison. Perhaps they are ignorant. I hope…
Project Gunwalker is so disturbing on many fronts. BATFU attempts to expand it’s authority and power (all w/o basis in statute) to stop the flow of weapons to the drug cartels in Mexico…who could be against that? Who is against clean air? It sounds so tidy, so all-American. Reality is that the Mexican gun problem is a pre-text for the agency to continue its assault on the rights of American citizens. They will obviously trample your 2nd Amendment rights, but they have shown they will also trample your 1st, 4th, 5th, and 6th Amendment rights as well.
To learn that they engage in this practice while outrageous, is hardly surprising to anyone who has been on the gettin’ end of this agency in one form or another. To engage in this behavior to obtain more power, money and infringement on the rights of citizens simply calls for the agency to be disbanded. Such is the depth of the institutional cancer-with apologies to the decent among them, they can find other work.
The American public largely sits by apathetically unaware, more concerned about these “gun nuts” than the door-kickers. If the creature I recently discovered, known as “Snookie” (yes I’m out of it-I was chastised for not knowing what a “Snookie” was, so I tried to find out), were to express her outrage then we’d see outrage amongst the wandering public. We’d rather follow Charlie Sheen losing his mind, than our country losing it’s constitution.
What of this White House dolt with the “I don’t knows”? Well, Spicoli was lovable in his own way, he truly didn’t know much beyond the bagel in his pants and his concern was limited to his next toke. The White House does know. Eric Holder is neck deep in this, BATFU being given the ok by main Justice to go forward. Obama is many things, stupid (as in lack of intelligence) is not one of them. That the Baghdad Bob of the administration goes out and lies to us doesn’t faze American society. Somehow we are to believe that the President doesn’t know that a U.S. Senator is being stonewalled on his investigation of criminal behavior of an executive agency. Yeah right, they just haven’t briefed the President on it…a story that has hit CBS’s Evening News three times in a week.
Project Gunwalker is a great story. You can follow it as it developed on Sipsey Street and War on Guns…as the onion was peeled. It is such a great story, with such tragic consequences, you wish it was fiction. Is the death of Brian Terry not enough to get anyone to care? Obama “doesn’t know” anything about Brian Terry being killed with a gun BATFU allowed to go directly to drug cartels? It’s obvious he doesn’t care either. Despite the lie that he “supports the 2nd Amendment” this kind of story doesn’t help his subtle yet real efforts to advance the cause of “gun control” and continue his systematic stomping of the Constitutional rights of citizens.
As a side note, it will be interesting to follow the Fed prosecution of Carter’s Country in Texas. Accused by BATFU of allowing straw purchasers… Fortunately, the people involved have a lawyer, a really good lawyer, Dick DeGuerin, you know those lawyers that defend all of those people we hate…murderers, rapists etc..? Well DeGuerin has been quoted as saying that his client’s did what BATFU instructed them to do… We shall see. Is Project Gunwalker beyond Arizona? Will the prosecution just fade away?
